Joel Black is an Outpatient Therapist at Sparlin Mental Health. In this role, Joel provides therapy to children, adolescents, adults and families, in addition to co-facilitating a weekly DBT Skills Group. With personal experience living in recovery, Joel’s desire to help others inspired him to pursue a career in Social Work. Joel believes listening with compassion and connecting with others are among the most rewarding aspects of his role. Prior to joining the Sparlin team, Joel worked at a suicide and crisis hotline, at an inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility and delivered services within the Missouri Department of Corrections. Joel is certified in substance abuse counseling and trained in suicide prevention.
In his personal time, Joel enjoys several hobbies, including bowling, gardening, biking, hiking, camping and live music. Joel is a longtime practitioner of meditation and also engages a positive support network to maintain mental wellness. Joel and his partner have eight children and several pets, including three cats, a dog, fishes and a corn snake.
